Background: Coriander is a well-known spice that is used to flavor food. However, it also has medicinal properties.
For thousands of years it has been used by people in Asia, Africa, and Europe by physicians. It was used during the Han Dynasty of China, by the ancient Greeks, and the ancient Egyptians for curing disease. Coriander seeds have even been discovered in the tombs of Egyptian Pharaohs.
Coriander can be used to ease digestive problems. It is also chewed as a way to eliminate bad breath. Some cultures consider it an aphrodisiac. In China it is also used to alleviate unpleasant odors in the genital areas of both men and women.
In China during the 6th century, coriander was actually used as a treatment for measles.
Applications: Antispasmodic/Analgesic
Coriander is used to treat minor digestive problems and pain.
Digestive System: Coriander is used as a remedy for bloating, cramps, and flatulence. It can also sooth a nervous gut by reducing muscle spasms.
Analgesic: Coriander can also be used in lotion for to treat rheumatic pain.
Description: Coriander is native to Europe and Asia, but can be grown all over the world. The seeds are gathered in late summer. The plant has a strong aromatic effect. It grows up to 20 inches high and has small upper leaves used for flavoring food. It also grows white and pink flowers that produce seeds.
Coriander Dosage: Coriander essential oils can be used externally to treat rheumatic pain. Leaves can be ingested to sooth digestion. Coriander seeds can be ground into a paste to be used on skin or in the mouth for odor relief.
An infusion of 2 tsp dried seeds in 250 mL (1 cup) of water can be taken once a day for digestive relief.
