Ideal for mixing large or small batches of for the integral colouring of cement based materials such as stucco, making concrete slabs, patio pavings, garden ornaments etc, etc, or just colouring concrete or mortar. Added either to your dry cement powder if mixing by hand or during mixing along with the other ingredients if using a concrete mixer
Colour pigment usage is calculated as a ratio of pigment:cement by weight less than 1% of the cement weight will give you a washed out look whilst the maximum recommended is 10%.of the cement weight more dye than this it will have an adverse effect on the strength of your mortar or concrete. I usually use approx 4%(25:1) to 8% (12.5:1) which is a 1 or 2 x 500gm bags of colour to ½ a bag of cement (12.5kg) to 24kg each of sharp sand and pea gravel dependent on depth of colour required Basically, a concrete dye is a colouring agent, supplied in concentrated form, that is dispersed during mixing. The finished colour will depend largely on a number of circumstances such as the colour of your sand or gravel and will much darker when first cast then when dry, finishing with a good quality sealer either Matt or Gloss will greatly enhance the finished product. Solvent-based sealers are easy to apply and give you a gloss finish. Or water-based give a more natural look I find that if you use the 24kg bags of 10mm or 20mm gravel/ballast/sand etc, from places such as B & Q or the national builders merchants, they will normally give a standard colour as they are usually from central sources but if it is for large amounts the 1 tonne bags bought locally are the cheapest and easiest option but bear in mind that as sand and gravel colours in different areas of the country are completely different, also cement varies it follows that the finished product will differ accordingly, so try to keep all the materials from the same source. Cement also comes in grey or white, both types of cement are available in 25kg bags from large DIY shops or builders merchants, the white will give a brighter colour, especially to the lighter pigments, but costs approx twice as much, if quality is more important than price it can certainly be worth while.
