THIS UNIT IS A REFUGIUM MANUFACTURED TO FILTER AQUARIUMS UP TO 150 GALLONS.

Each unit is supplied to M.J. Aquatics and is manufactured by professional people. The mud supplied is Aragamud by Caribsea which is a refugium substrate full of the essential minerals and elements found in other muds available. We use a fixed 12mm inlet pipe and a 40mm fixed outlet pipe.

THE INLET ON OUR UNITS HAS ALWAYS BEEN INTERNALLY PIPED TO DIVERT THE FLOW OF WATER TO THE BOTTOM OF THE FIRST COMPARTMENT AS THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE CORRECT WAY TO OBTAIN MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY. THE DESIGN IS WELL PROVEN OVER MANY YEARS. THE WATER PASSES THROUGH ALL OF THE BIO BALLS FOR GREATER AERATION AND FILTRATION AND WILL NOT BACK  SIPHON IN THE EVENT OF A POWER FAILURE UNLIKE MANY OTHER UNITS AVAILABLE.

A refugium is the best way to filter your marine tank and operates as nature intended, this model (600) can filter tanks up to 150 gallons volume.

The filter requires minimal maintenance just a mud change after approximately every 2 years. Yes you read that correctly EVERY TWO YEARS.

This system is a natural filtration system that simulates the environment found in coral reefs. You do not need a protein skimmer although if you are using one at present you are advised to run it for an hour approximately twice a day until the caulerpa has begun maturing. The water is kept well oxygenated through the photosynthesis of caulerpa eliminating the need for air pumps. Run the lamp 24 hours a day causing the caulerpa to grow only through photosynthesis. The caulerpa will prevent the unwanted growth of hair algae within the main tank by competing for the essential nutrients. The growth of the caulerpa can be controlled by harvesting it with scissors to use as a fresh natural food for your fish.

The system works by using the waste products of your fish and animals and fixing them into plant tissue preventing the accumulation of ammonia, nitrites and nitrates and also absorbing phosphates whilst stabilizing PH.

Fishes living in a system operating with a well established refugium remain much healthier and more colourful. Research has shown that this natural filtering helps prevent and can even cure Lateral Line Disease. This is the most cost effective way to keep your tank perfect.

We decided to start selling these units in our shop after purchasing one for our own personal tank. Prior to installation our Nitrates read 160ppm. With just one large handful of caulerpa costing £5.00 and just 3 days later it was down to 80ppm and after two weeks between 0 and 10 ppm. I wish we had started with one of these as we only do water changes once every 6 to 8 weeks now also with no ill effects to our fish or coral.
