=================

C16

This is a very rare 80's classic home computer, the COMMODRE 16 was brought out as a replacement for the COMMODORE VIC-20 and as a mid-market rival for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum and as a cheaper alternative to the COMMODORE 64.

Originally priced at £139.99, with 16Kb Ram and decent sound and graphics capabilities(with, for it's time, an amazing 128 colours!), this was a wonderful little machine with some great games titles available for it (some of which are included in this sale), and a very user friendly BASIC (a vast improvement over the Vic-20 and C64's BASIC) meant it was simple and fun to programme yourself. However with 16k memory it was (unjustly) considered lacking next to the (inferior in my view) 48K Spectrum and the 64k of the mighty Commodore 64.

Basically it was too little, too late from Commodore. The machine was in many ways a step back from the Commodore 64 (albeit with a better BASIC and alot cheaper in cost) and it recieved little support from Commodore, the Computer media and, with some very notable exceptions, the gaming industry.

However, from my own point of view, I think it was a great wee machine, very under-rated and under-supported by its makers at the time. I loved my C16 and still think it was shamefully treated and under-respected in it's day. It did have some great and imaginitive games available and the programmers that did stick with it pushed it to it's limits with some excellent results. This computer is a forgotten classic and this one I am selling really does deserve a good and loving home!

The computer has been tested and powers up and runs no problem, loads games, all keys work. Basically it is in excellent shape for its age.

Cosmetically, the computer is in good, clean condition and looks practically new. it is an early edition Commodore 16, with the Joystick ports labelled 0 & 1 (later models were marked 1 &2).
The Datasetter works perfectly and is in great cosmetic condition.
The Games cassettes are all in good nick, although the cases on three have cracks. All inlays intact.

SORRY - UK BUYERS ONLY. NO REFUNDS OR RETURNS - SOLD AS SEEN - DUE TO ITS AGE THERE ARE NO GARUNTEES GIVEN.

The original press advertisment for the Commodore 16

The Commodore 16 belongs to the Commodore 264 series (with the Commodore C116 and Plus/4). It was designed to replace the Commodore VIC 20, but it was not compatible with the VIC-20, nor with the C64.

It had the same characteristics as the Commodore Plus/4 : same graphic resolution, same sound system, same CPU and speed, just less memory.
It featured a version of the original 6502 CPU named 7501, and a new video chip named TED. With 16 colours, and 16 shades of colour, it had an amazing 128 colours available.
But it had no hardware sprites like the ones on the VIC II chip, so animated games and collision detection were very hard to do.

It featured a powerful basic language (contrary to the VIC-20 or the C64) which makes graphics and sounds easy to program.

The C16, like the Commodore Plus/4 was a commercial failure and had little success.

It seems that the first C16s had the two control ports labelled JOY 0 and JOY 1 instead of JOY 1 and JOY 2, just as a hint for collectors :-)
