"COMING SOON: SILENT MOVIE ADVERTISEMENTS" is a compilation of restored newspaper movie ads and images from the silent film era. We have taken great care to restore them as much as possible to their original state, as you can tell from the "before" and "after" images of the movie "Anne of Green Gables" below. All the great classics are here, including "The Big Parade," "The Birth of a Nation," "The Gold Rush," "The Thief of Bagdad," and "Ben-Hur," along with scores of others not so well known and almost surely forgotten. It has been written that 90 percent of films made before 1950 have been lost forever, and quite a few of these ads are about the only evidence we have that such films existed. The collection is full of dramas, comedies, epics, and Westerns. Big-name stars appear alongside those now consigned to obscurity. Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, quite possibly the first "power couple" in Tinseltown, are well represented. The images mainly cover the years 1914-1928, and end with Charlie Chaplin's silent films from the 1930s. It's in JPEG format, and a text index will be provided. It's fun and historic, and a wonderful addition to your film collection!
