Alfriston Clergy House was the first property to be acquired by the National Trust. It was purchased in 1896 for £10. The house is a 14th-century Wealdon hall house. Although the name reflects the fact that the parish priest and his housekeeper used it, the house was originally built as a farmer's house. It is a very modest property. It is a low-ceilinged, two-storey, timber-framed building with a thatched roof. Part of the house was rebuilt in the 17th century. It has a rare chalk and sour milk floor. Outside there is a small but well-planted cottage garden. The house is open to the public.

Ian Logan began his career as a textile designer in the 1960s with a small print company; they designed for all the trendy fashion and interior companies of the time including Mary Quant, Jeff banks and Biba.

After designing a range of tin-ware called 'Salome', which became an enormous success, he went on to design and produce hundreds of decorative tin items and became known as the 'tin-man' of design. His range of tins included copies of 140 real buildings including Macy’s of New York and Harrods. He also made designs of actual British stately homes and houses for the National Trust and British museums.
