SquareTrade © AP6.0A Collection of Voyages and Travels Some Now First Printed From Original Manuscripts, Other Now First Published in English in Six Volumes Churchill (publishers)
Book Description: Messrs Churchill for Henry Lintot and John Osborn, London, 1746. Full Calf. Book Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Third Edition. Folio - 14 Inches. Scarce collection of voyage which remains one of the most exhaustive works of its kind published in the 18th century. This text is in sound condition internally, though lacking all maps and plates. This set does not appear to have ever had the plates bound in suggesting they were probably held in a plate or atlas volume or volumes. The bindings vary from presentable to falling apart. Bookplate of 'Ferguson of Raith' (Robert Ferguson 1767-1840), to front pastedowns. 5 leaves (pages 161-162, 391-392, 395-396, 401-402, 411-412) ripped out of Vol I and missing one leaf in Vol III. Vol I - Binding okay with boards hanging on by the cords. Free front endpaper loose. Missing spine label. (10), xxix, (1), ix-lxxii, (4), 668 pages. Includes Navarette's Empire of China, The Travels of Martin Baumgarten. and Monck's Voyage. Vol II - Book split down the middle. Joints cracking. No volume title page. 743, (1) pages. Contains the travels of Nieuhoff, John Smith, Columbus, Borii and others. Vol III - Cracked in half down the centre of the spine. (4), 5-793, (1) pages. Missing 5N1. Contains Cavallo's Relation of the Kingdom of Chile, Monson's Naval Tracts, Baldaeus' Description of Malabar and Coromandel. Retains three folding letterpress tables of Malabar. Vol IV - Binding in better condition. Some cracking to joints but boards remain attached. (2), 780 pages plus a folding plate of a sounding vessel. Includes Gemelli Careri's Voyage Round the World, Rolamb's Journey to Constantinople, and Shipwreck on the Coast of the Isle of Quelpaert. Vol V - Contains Barbot's Description of the Coasts of North and South Guinea. Both boards detached. Stitching loose. (4), 580, 589-708 pages. Register continuous despite pagination jump. Vol VI - Both boards detached and spine split. 824, 102, (2) pages. Contains del Techo's History of Paraguary, etc, Baron's Kingdom of Tonqueen, Norwood's Voyage to Virginia, Phillips's Voyage of the Hannibal, Gatonbe's North-west Passage, Sufferings of Robert Everard, The Mosqueto Indian and His Golden River, Lord's Sects in the East Indies, and Skippon's Account of a Journey to the Low Countries, etc. Pages 120-180 a bit stained to the fore edge, affecting margin and on couple of leaves extending to text. Overall a defective set, but still a cornerstone of any serious travel book library.
