Late 18th. century copper coal token of the Greysouthen Colliery, a few miles south-west of Cockermouth, most likely issued by William Walker & Co.

Obverse  : a  '4'  * GRAYSOUTHEN.    Reverse : a '4' *COLLIERY 8 Co.

In 1787 William Walker & Co. were mining coal in a considerable portion of Greysouthen and continued an extensive and profitable business over the next eighty years.  In 1800 William Wilson & Co. opened up a new colliery and so by the end of the 18th century there were two firms mining coal that could have produced this token.  There is  a similar token with the initials 'W&Co' but in this case it doesn't help much !

From the style of the engraving it is most likely the earlier and so it is for this reason that the token is assigned to William Walker.1

The numeral on the token probably stands for bushels and the piece was used as a truck ticket representing the purchase of a cart load of coal.
