Due to continued thinning of my HiFi collection, offered here is my Rotel RCD-855 Compact Disc player in excellent condition and full working order
Rotel is a Japanese manufacturer of high end audiophile equipment renowned for quality and value for money, winning awards and receiving critical acclaim in the hifi press
Looking at the RCD-855, the first thing that strikes is it’s simple build – clean lines and minimalist appearance, striking in a subtle manner if that is possible ! The only hint of a slight move away from functionality are the extended buttresses at either end of the fascia – gives a “rack mount” feel in my opinion and are quite striking when compared with the overall simplicity of the unit
Moving on to build quality, pick up the RCD-855 and there’s a good indication that this is something rather special – quite weighty for a Compact Disc player at a healthy 7 kilogrammes, mainly due to the substantial all-metal case with thicker than usual steel and a good sized power supply within. Dimensions come in at 44.5 x 31.5 x 8.6 cms (W x D x H)
Electronics – better still. Disc spinning is via the rock solid Philips CDM4 transport. The Rotel designed main board uses top quality Black Gate electrolytic capacitors, the highly acclaimed Philips TDA1541A DAC and SAA72280B digital filter. Fine pedigree indeed
Partnering the RCD-855 with my Roksan Kandy III and Tannoy Little Red Monitors gives very impressive results. Sound quality is fresh and natural with an impressive depth of soundstage – thanks mainly to the now much sought after Philips TDA1541A DAC. The RCD-855 is an extremely engaging listen and will genuinely surprise, especially if you have been listening to inferior budget equipment
From HI-FI NEWS & RECORD REVIEW NOV 1989 “… a budget audiophile design, it clearly delivered the best CD sound for the money (£250). The lab performance was fine, the sound quality exemplary, and indeed players costing £800 get recommended if they show a performance like this one !….” Remember, that was when £250 was a considerable amount of money J
Condition is very clean as you can see from the pictures – there are some marks consistent with age and use but there are no major scratches and no dings or dents. A very nice example of this classic Compact Disc player
As you would expect, the RCD-855 is in full working order with no problems or workarounds at all. Shipped complete with owners manual and original chunky Rotel Remote Control
The RCD-855 will be very securely packed for shipment (read my feedback please) . UK shipping is via next day courier and is only £12-50
