FOUNDER OF THE GUILD OF HANDICRAFT
Charles Robert Ashbee (1863 –1941). Celebrated Victorian Architect, designer. An outstanding artist & innovative social thinker. Educated at Wellington College & King’s College, Cambridge. Articled to the architect G. F. Bodley. While at Toynbee Hall set up the School of Handicraft in 1887, then Guild of Handicraft in 1888. Transferred the entire Guild from the East End to Chipping Campden in the Cotswolds in 1902.
This drawing is from a collection of sketches Ashbee made in 1879 and 1886. It shows a location on the Rhine entitled Ehren Fels. It is signed with the monogram CRA and measures 7 x 5 inches. The condition is very good.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire an original drawing by one of the leading designers of the Arts & Crafts Movement. I have been selling drawings from this group over the past few years and many have found a place major dealer inventories & private collections around the world.
