SIR CHARLES JAMES FOX BUNBURY, BARONET (1809-1885). Botanist & Plant Collector. Associate of Charles Darwin; brother-in-law of Charles Lyell; Accompanied Sir George Napier to Cape of Good Hope 1837; Published JOURNAL OF A RESIDENCE AT THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE in 1848; Elected to the Royal Society in 1851; Published numerous papers on Systematic & Geographical Botany; between 1846 and 1861 his papers on fossil plants were published in the Journal of the Geological Society & his name will always be associated with Palaeobotanical subjects taking the study of Fossil Plants to a high scientific level; acted as Foreign Secretary to the Geological Society 1847-1853; published BOTANICAL FRAGMENTS in 1883, botanical observations made in South Africa & South America.

I recently acquired two broken albums relating to Sir Charles James Fox Bunbury and members of the extended Bunbury family. The main album was a compilation of botanical drawings in Bunbury’s own hand dating between 1827 and 1830. The endpapers of the album inscribed in ink BOTANICAL DRAWINGS BY SIR C. J. F. BUNBURY. The second album was a random group of drawings and watercolour sketches by and of various Bunburys up to the year 1897. It measures 7¼ x 4½ inches.

Inscription: Unsigned. ORNITHOPUS SCORPIOIDES. GENOA. MARCH. 1828.

Condition: Overall very good. Some ugly glue marks & creases in the corners. Unframed.
