Closure of RAF Manston cover signed by Wing Commander Peter Kennedy the last Station Commander and Flight Lieutenant Ted Girdler former Red Arrows pilot

JS(CC)60b RAF cover for the closure of Royal Air Force Manston on the 31 March 1999. The cover artwork shows various aircraft associated with Manston including Vickers Virginia 'Isle of Thanet' of No 500 Squadron RAuxAF, a USAF North American F-86D Sabre based at Manston during the 1950s, a Westland Sea King HAR3 of No 202 Squadron 'C' Flight, Lt Cdr Eugene Esmonde VC DSO Fairey Swordfish of No 825 Squadron Fleet Air Arm who took off from RAF Manston to attack the german battleships during the Channel Dash in 1942. Hawker Hurricane MKIIC of No 43 Squadron is shown along with Supermarine Spitfire Mk XVI of No 403 Squadron which are both on display in the Spitifre and Hurricane Memorial Building. Along the bottom of the cover Boulton Paul Defiants of No 264 Squadron are shown during the Battle of Britain and DeHavilland Chipmunks of 1 AEF. The cover bears the RAF Mnaston badge with 1916-1999 underneath.

The cover bears 26p definitive stamp cancelled with Closure of Manston Manston Ramsgate Kent postmark for the 31.03.99 showing Hurricane and Spitfire side view. The covers have been flown in Aerovodochody L29 Delfin from RAF Manston and took part in a a short aerobatic display flown by Flight Lieutenant Ted Girdler, a former Red Arrows pilot from 192-74.

This cover is signed by the last Officer Commanding RAF Manston Wing Commander Peter Kennedy RAF and Flight Lieutenant Ted Girdler who flew the covers. Unfortunately Ted Girdler was killed in an aircraft accident during the Eastbourne Airshow some years ago.

Official special numbered and certified on reverse.
