“. . . . I was able to spot the damp problems at the point of looking around the caravan with a view to buying it, I was able to determine that I could fix the problem to a satisfactory degree, and not telling the owner I could fix it, was able to get a huge discount due to the problems that this caravan had. I even bought a caravan from a dealer and got a similar big discount simply because these repairs are too time consuming for dealers to attempt and would have put most buyers off. . . . .” “ . . . . . I managed to repair inside a cupboard right to the back without having to remove the cupboard which contained sink and fridge. . . . .” “ . . . . . Continue to remove and bag up all of the damaged boarding, polystyrene insulation if fitted and wooden baton where it is soft and rotted. Note how the baton can still be rotted even behind seemingly solid wall boarding, consider at this stage removing a little more wall boarding . . . . .” “ . . . . . You should now have a completely clear area, bar for some screws poking through from the outside. This really is phase one of the repair complete . . . . .” “ . . . . . if applicable cut the board half way across a baton, that way you can pin the factory fitted board and your new piece to the baton and create a solid seam which you can sand and finish . . . . .” “ . . . . . Screws in the metal cover/sealing strip are usually covered with clips of a rubber/plastic insert which can be levered out with a flat screwdriver and then carefully pulled out from the recess in the metal strip . . . . . .” “ . . . . . . into had already been removed. The fact that a screw seems slack may infact indicate that the wood inside is rotten. . . . .” “ . . . . . a big line of clear silicone along the top of these strips will set the alarm bells going that this is a caravan with a problem. . . . . .” ". . . . . the screw“s will go back through the silicone and this will ensure a more watertight seal at those points too. You may wish again to check that your repair is watertight before commencing work on the rebuilding of the interior. . . . . . .” “ . . . . .When I repaired my first caravan, I decided to shop around and attempt to find the exact thickness of ply, I eventually found . . . . . .” “ . . . . . .If you want to be sure that you are going to get the correct thickness of baton and plywood then you might be able to get some scraps that you can experiment with before you buy it in quantity. . . . . .” “ . . . . . .to achieve a position which when the final board is fitted will be level with the surrounding wall board. . . . . .” “ . . . . . .So, working with and completing one ply panel at a time, fit all the panels and be sure that they match up to the thickness of any surrounding furniture, trim or wall board . . . . . .” “ . . . . . . short panel pins which should be countersunk slightly below the level of the board so that they will not be visible or interfere with the wallpaper when it’s fitted. . . . . . “ “ . . . . . .I always apply a little wood filler as required to finish any levelling or at least to cover the tiny panel pin holes, this will improve the appearance of the joints . . . . .”
