Canon's EOS range are the best selling autofocus SLR cameras, and the EOS 500 was the first of the modern, ultra compact models. It's very small and light at only 355g, yet compatible with the vast range of Canon EF and independent EOS-fit lenses (not included - see below).

Exposure modes include variable program, shutter priority, aperture priority, metered manual, fully auto and four subject-based modes; portraits, landscapes, close ups and sports. Plus, Canon's auto depth of field mode calculates the correct aperture to ensure both subject and background are in focus.

Metering modes include evaluative, and partial with exposure lock. Exposure compensation of +/- 2 stops (in half stops) is available. Shutter speeds and aperture settings, plus an exposure bar graph are clearly displayed in the viewfinder, and there's a second LCD on the top plate.

The camera has a full range of shutter speeds from 30 seconds to 1/2000th in half stops, with flash synchronisation up to 1/90th, plus B for time exposures. The built in motor loads the film automatically, winds on at up to one frame per second, and winds off the film at the end. The clever prewind feature means that if you open the back accidentally, only the unused shots are affected!

The built in flash fires automatically when needed in the subject-based modes, and can be turned on or off in all other modes. Redeye reduction is available, and a standard Canon hot shoe allows external TTL dedicated flashguns to be used.

The autofocus system has a wide area sensor to ensure that your subject is correctly identified and focused, using Canon's AIM (Advanced Integrated Multipoint) system, and an auxiliary lamp illuminates the subject for focusing in very low light.

Other advanced features include multiple exposures, ISO film speed override, cancellable audio warnings, self timer and mid-roll rewind. The camera also has a standard 2.5mm socket for an electrical remote control (not supplied).

This combination of automatic features and manual options makes this an ideal camera for photographers from complete beginners all the way up to enthusiasts. Plus, the camera's light weight and small size make it easy to carry around. It's even a great second camera for existing EOS users who want a backup, or to use two different film types at the same time.

This camera is in fully working order, and good condition. The viewfinder is bright and clear with only some specks of dust which can't affect the pictures. All controls operate smoothly and positively. Cosmetically, there are the usual signs of use with some small surface scratches and scrapes here and there in the plastic finish, and paint wear on the strap lugs.

No dents, dings or deep scratches, and overall it's in good shape!

Compatible with the dozens of excellent lenses in the vast Canon EF range, including ultra wide angles and fisheyes, fast prime wide angle, standard and telephoto lenses, extreme teles, macro and tilt/shift lenses, plus an array of zooms, including wide angle, wide-tele and telephoto types. Many use Canon's USM (UltraSonic Motor) technology for extremely fast, almost silent focusing. Some newer lenses have IS (Image Stabilization) technology to reduce camera shake. In addition, most independent manufacturers produce lenses in EOS fitting, including Sigma (some models have HSM HyperSonic Motors, which are similar to Canon's USM), Tokina, Tamron, Vivitar and many others.

EOS 35mm cameras are NOT compatible with Canon EF-S lenses designed exclusively designed for small-sensor Digital SLRs, or independent equivalents such as Sigma DC, Tamron Di-II or Tokina DX types.

Most EOS models (including this one) also work happily with manual lenses and accessories such as mirror lenses, slide copiers, microscope and telescope adapters, with metered manual or aperture priority auto exposure, and stopped down metering. Please note that Canon EOS cameras are NOT directly compatible with older, manual focus Canon FD and FL lenses, though adapters are available (not included) for metered manual or aperture priority auto exposure, with manual diaphragm and stopped down metering.
