British India Gold Mohur of 1862
A rare and
valuable gold coin from the British Empire
A Mohur is a gold
coin that was formerly minted by several
governments including
British India (including the princely
states), the
Moghul Empire,
Nepal, and
Afghanistan. It was usually equivalent in
value to fifteen silver
rupees. It was last minted in British India
in 1918, but some princely states issued them until absorption into India.
Coins were also issued in 2/3 Mohur (10 Rupees) and 1/3 Mohur (5 Rupees) by
the British Government, and Half Mohur (7 Rupees, 8 Anna) by some of the
Princely States.
The Mohur is a scarce coin to
find and has reached 768 pounds
here in February and since then the only other Mohur on the market is an
1865 one, currently
here is available of the 1875 year- a slightly more common date and is
currently bid at 700 pounds.
Out of ebay one sold at auction in 2002 for
$2100,
here. since then the gold price and coin's scarcity has increased!
We look forward to seeing bids on this item!
