British Army Webbing: "1944 LARGE PACK (VALISE) STRAPS"

A pair of unissued British Army 1944 DATED WEBBING LARGE PACK STRAPS. Straps like these were also known as "Valise Straps", and were used to attach items to the Large Pack. You often see photo's of British Army soldiers wearing them criss-crossed across their packs, holding the steel helmet in place when they were in full marching order.
Straps like these would have been worn by a range of forces, including - the Army, Airborne Forces, Parachute Regiment, Commandos, Special Air Service, Long Range Desert Group, Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Chindits, RAF Regiment, and even the Home Guard – when some units were equipped with standard issue army webbing towards the end of the war. This pair comes from a small batch that came from Army stores. They were all made at the same time, and carry their manufacturer's details and the date. A typical stamping found on the straps is shown in the second photo. The straps approximately 28 inches (71cm) long. They are unissued and unblancoed. There might be a bit of natural darkening of the brass fittings due to over six decades in storage. Excellent condition considering their age.
