It depicts 502 Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, during combat operations on 11 June, 1944 in France. The battalion in forcing the last of four bridges on the road to Carentan was suddenly pinned to the ground by intense enemy fire from heavily-fortifed positions. Devastating and unceasing enemy fire prevented any move and inflicted numerous casualties. In this almost hopless situation, Lt. Cole courageously issued orders to assult the enemy positions with fixed bayonets. Rising to their feet his battalion ran across the open ground and into the enemy position. The personal bravery and outstanding leadership displayed by Lt. Cole are worthy of the highest praise in the military service, and were recognized by the Medal of Honor.
