I have had this instrument for 30+ years. I purchased it in Northern Calif. It is one of many musical instruments I bought in my "buy any unique musical instrument stage" :-) I have sold off most of the stuff and I am just getting to this one. I am selling a unique violin in another aution.
I took this instrument into a local violin shop in Tulsa to get help identifying it, He couldn't , however, a wonderful person in Belgium gave me more information. I canceled the original auction because I found more important information. Apparently this instrument was built by Anastasios Stathopoulo the founder of Epiphone at the "House of Stathopoulo". Epiphone was a family business established in 1873 as "the House of Stathopoulo" by Anastasios Stathopoulo, a greek violin maker. In 1923 they incorporated and at this time made mostly high quality and fancy banjos. In 1928 the name was changed to "Epiphone" after Epi Stathopoulo, president of the company and one of the founder's sons. In the 1930's, the company changed its emphasis to guitars. Epiphone was the only banjo company to successfully switch to guitar production. The label appears to be from the late 1800's to early 1900's. It reads A. STATHOPOULO MANUFACTURER AND IMPORTER OF MUSICAL MERCHANDISE AND MUSIC 247 WEST 42ND ST. NEW YORK N.Y. U.S.A. I would be grateful to any comments or insights into this instrument. I have inquired with some Universities as well as collectors and we are stumped on what it is exactly, Probably a Greek Folk Instrument. It is 32 inches long, the fret board is 15 inches, it has been played a lot but is in excellent playing condition, there appears to be some light scribe marks that may have been for the player. It is 9 inches at the bottom and 2 1/2 inches thick.
I did not put any scratch cover or wax on it, before I ship I may put some on the back to prevent scratching in transit
Anastasios's Grandnephew contacted me and confirmed it being his Grandfathers instrument. Possibly an experimental instrument just prior to his making his first archtop guitars, he may have been experimenting with the arch using this instrument as a prototype. There are museums that have inquired about it being donated I AM LOOKING FOR HIS GRANDSON AGAIN AND I HAVE LOST THE EMAILS, IF YOU KNOW HIM OR IF YOU ARE READING THIS PLEASE EMAIL OR CALL :-) Found him! He is the great guitar player Bob Cage I have also been advised that it is very similar to Tromba Marina, Several Universities and collectors from Greece and other countries identifying it as a cross of a Bouzouki and a Tromba Marina. Like any great inventor Anastasios was creating something new for the market. Greetings from Magoula Sparta Greece, Stathopoulos birthplace.

The instrument that you were selling is not a traditional greek istrument.Although Stathopoulos was violin maker also so probably he was experimenting on something different as you write on the ebay page.He was making wondefull bouzoukia which now are very valuable here in Greece.
If you have any further questions about him do not hesitate to send me an email.
I would like to ask you who is Stathopoulos grandson because me and my students are trying to find the genaology tree of Stathopoulos Familly here in Greece and in Usa.
Sincerely
Dr.Giannis Tsoulogiannis
ANOTHER EMAIL ABOUT IT BEING A TROMBA
Hi! I was very interested in the historical information you
included with the description of this instrument, and thought I'd contact you to see if you are familiar with an instrument known as a tromba marina. Also having only one string, it is played by touching the string at its vibration nodes, and is bowed ABOVE the point where the left hand touches the strings. I'm fairly certain that your instrument is not a tromba marina (literally 'marine trumpet', and also called a 'nun's fiddle') because the t.m. usually had a bridge with one foot on the top, and the other passing through a hole to sit on the inside back of the instrument. Still, the similarities struck me, so I thought I'd write. Thanks again for the history lesson! Dave ANOTHER EMAIL
HI... I hope this helps with some more information for your guitar. The instrument is played with a bow, usually using horse hair as it was widely available in villages. My grandfarther in Croatia played a simmilar instrument but the body was more round in shape. It's a very ancient instrument developed in Southern Europe (perhaps Turkish). Hope that helps with the uniqueness of the guitar, but it's really a poor man's chelo. Regards Ivan I have got another email which describes it as an "experimental trapezoid violin" The body of your instrument does however strongly resemble the experimental trapezoid violin made by Felix Savart - French researcher of instrument acoustics - described by him in his thesis of 1819. I would suggest that this may have been inspirational to Stathopoulo when making this somewhat larger instrument. Another email that is very interesting It's not Greek (I'm a Greek folklorist; play and have studied this and another Hello. This is not folk greek instrument.I had three bouzouki of anastasios stathopoulos, now only one in my hand but i have seen several instrument of his in greece. This is perhaps something close to the cello version, which greeks played in Smyrna Area together with the greek band which had santouri, violin, cello, mandolin, oud as main instruments ,so this must be a cello with only one string which plays a kind of sort accompagniment.
THERE WAS A METAL PLATE HOLDING THE PEG IN PLACE AT ONE TIME
