Birdbrain
Original 18th Century Watercolour Painting
by Thomas Rowlandson (1756 - 1827)
A superb humorous caricature depicting a gentleman in profile with a bird that shares many of the gentleman's characteristic features by highly influential English artist Thomas Rowlandson. The ink and watercolour drawing is on late 18th century hand made paper by John Downman, it bears the Downman watermark as used between c.1775 and c.1800. Unfortunately the subject of the painting is not known to us, presumably a late 18th century politician or aristocrat, we would be grateful to hear from anyone who can identify him. The work remains in basically fine condition with only the light spotting and time staining inherent to a work of this age on paper. The painting is presented in a late 20th century mount and giltwood frame, the mount is stained lower right. This painting is signed lower right.
Rowlandson's extraordinary life and artistic career are well documented, a brief biography can be found at the following link;
