4 Years worth of experience in one book. Warts and all this demontsrates what to do, what not to do and the consquences of not doing these easy steps. Aimed at small home producers, people thinking of embarking on biodiesel, small commercial producers and those with a passing interest. “Reading the book as a newcomer to the market I enjoyed the humour that Frank injects into the book. He manages to turn a very dull subject into an entertaining read. It is easy to understand and may save you thousands in mistakes you won’t make.” Peter Franklin Lancashire. Hi, I am Frank Harris, now a Director of a successful consultancy based business advising large corporate clients on the benefits of using biodiesel for power generation and transport, but it wasn’t always this way. For the last 4 years I have been working within the biodiesel industry making all the mistakes you can imagine. I have spent thousands on bad kit, made awful fuel, created more “soap” than bio diesel, been on the verge of bankruptcy many times and been through the major peaks and troughs that the industry has delivered over the last few years. I don’t want you to make the same mistakes as me, and that’s why I have written my new book Biodiesel Facts. If I knew in those early days, what I know now, the business would have flourished. This book will ensure you learn from ALL of my mistakes and more. It will give you ALL the tools to make your biodiesel safely and to a high standard, be it at home or a small scale commercial producer. Would you like to know more? “The book isn’t just for new comers, it is for anyone that wants to truly understand bio diesel from a practical or technical perspective. It is excellent” Simon Hadley Buckinghamshire Our book is aimed at the home or small commercial producer but, even larger producers may learn a thing or two. So whether you are looking to make fuel for yourself and your family or to sell as a commercial concern there are key factors which must be taken into account and it is these which we will address in this book. With every book sold we also include the following:
Excerpts from the book; “As we have identified, WVO has impurities in the form of solids and water (and possibly other things, I have seen rats, condoms, bottles, cigarette ends, cutlery and sponges to name a few) which must be removed prior to the production process.”
“Try and be friends with your EA representative, this may seem obvious, but trust me it is difficult at times”
“Many people find SHE (Safety, Health and Environment) boring, over rated, irritating, pedantic or even unnecessary”
“Remember these simple facts; if you add water to biodiesel you have to know how to get it back out completely.”
“But what about those producers who had gone out and started their own waste oil collection rounds? Well, sure there was a lot of new competition in 2008 as every Tom, Dick and Harry started an oil collection round because they saw some WVO advertised on Ebay for 60p per litre”
“We saw earlier in this book that the chemical process of making biodiesel is really quite straight forward and could even be done in a bucket, but making good biodiesel is a little more tricky, so in this section I am going to show you a tried and tested method for making good biodiesel and, I will tell you from time to time the mistakes and shortcuts that taught me what not to do.”
“When I first set up my biodiesel plant with all of the shiny new equipment, I opened the reactor user manual and started to make my first batch of biodiesel. I thought the fuel I had made was superb and in my excitement, I sent some to the labs to be tested. It came back as only having a 60% reaction and I was devastated!”
“One of the things I was told by an equipment manufacturer was to heat the fuel before purifying it and then to purge off the methanol. There are two good reasons to ignore this advice, first, heating biodiesel will speed up its degradation through oxidation and second if you then purge with air (as was suggested) you increase the oxidation possibly ending up with peroxides causing polymerisation of the fuel – this is bad.”
