Description:
Here we have a very special piece. Not only is it gorgeous but it also has historical interest because of who it was made for.
Purely from an asthetic point of view this tray has been crafted wonderfully. Around the outside a floral and swirl pattern runs riot to the scroll relief handles. Both these aspects have been cut deep into the metal with the metal thickness at 0.5cm in the gaps. The lap of the tray, where once plain, now carries said inscription surrounded by heraldic type engravings of swirls, diamonds and flowers. The images look almost like Prince of Wales feathers but not quite.
The underside of the piece is of course plain with the EPNS stamp along with the number "1472" and a makers shield with the initials "I&I 6".
The entire tray weighs a whopping 2.5kg!
Now to the engraving. It reads as follows...
Presented to Mrs Dundas, Along with Purse of Sovereigns & Gold Spectacles, To, Rev John Dundas, Highly Esteemed Minister of, Main St.U.F.Church. Murkirk, By The, Congregation & Friends, On Attaining His Semi Jubilee, December 1903
From this inscription we can gleam that this tray was a wonderful Christmas present to a man who was part of the history of the United Free Church of Scotland. He preached at a church which still meets and apparently had some gold sovereigns and spectacles we didn't recieve with the tray!
But in all seriousness this piece is not only well done but has that added charm of a history which some of you out there will no doubt connect with.
Condition wise there is some light tarnishing to the edges of the lap of the tray which is noticable. The bottom of the tray is also decidedly black. Not bad for a 106 year old piece of EPNS?
