The medieval village of Cockington was noted in the Domesday Book, and, on the face of it at least, little appears to have changed since. The village sits somewhat incongruously, right in the heart of urban Torbay, but it stubbornly refuses to to be tainted by modern developments. The thatched village (even the public toilets here are thatched!) is one of the most photographed places in the country, and the surrounding country park and woodland makes it an ideal destination for walking. This is a Horse Brass of the blacksmiths forge. Please visit my About Me Page! The origin of the Horse Brass goes back many centuries, when man first used the horse extensively on the land.
The superstitions prevalent at this time required a symbol to protect the horse from accident or injury and Horse Brasses were believed to have the supernatural powers to ward off evil spirits and prevent catastrophe.
There are many hundreds of designs with the origins in the past and even today new designs are being created to commemorate places of interest, historical buildings, royalty and the famous in our society, present and past.
Horse Brasses have become one of the greatest collectors item for generations.
