The Beano – Dennis the Menace, Plug, Minnie the Minx – 1996 empty 12-pack Crisps outer bag + 3 x individual packets.

This is an interesting item that dates from 1996. Which in the great scheme of things is not decades ago, but in the context of food packaging, anything more than a few months old is OLD. In the mid-1990s Bensons Crisps from Preston, Lancs made Corn Snacks (Crisps to you and me) based on characters from Beano comic. This is a large 15” x 13” 12-pack bag that contained 12 individual packets of the snacks – four of each character. The best before date is 26th Oct 1996 and there is a 1995 D.C. Thomson & Co Ltd copyright. The bag is of course empty, but it was saved in perfect clean condition. (The top was neatly cut to get the crisps out. It has been stored folded so there is a crease through the middle. As well as the outer bag, the person who saved it also saved one each of the snacks. Again, the top edge has been cut rather than pulled open so that it did not rip down the bag. Dennis the Menace snacks were Bacon & Baked Bean flavour, Plug was Salt & Vinegar, and Minnie the Minx was Tangy Tomato flavour. As I say, while not some mega-rare 1930s free gift, it is an interesting item that is already long-gone from the shops and probably won’t appear for sale too many times.
