FIVE pairs of vintage modernist door handles complete with original lockplates, co-designed by the founder of the Bauhaus, Walter Gropius, and Adolf Meyer in 1923 A fabulous opportunity to adorn your home with a true icon of 1920s modernism. Finding a set of five with original lockplates is extremely rare. The handles are executed in iron and have expected, minor surface wear consistent with age and decades of use. Please note that these are not new reproductions. The handles measure approximately about 11.5 cms) in length. This listing is for five complete pairs. I may be able to help if you are looking for a larger set; please let me know. For references and illustrations please see: 1) Die Metalwerkstatt am Bauhaus (The Bauhaus Metalworkshop), Bauhaus Archiv Berlin, 1992, p208, plate numbers 168 and 169. 2) A similar pair also appeared at auction in London in 1996. See Sothebys, Bauhaus and other important 20th Century Avant-Garde design, 1 November 1996, Lot No. 68. 3) A pair is held in the permanent collection of the V&A in London. See http://www.vam.ac.uk/vastatic/microsites/architecture/gal_ex_object.php?id=11&parent=1&object=40&area=2 4) Finally, there is also a German-language website devoted to the history of this particular door handle at http://www.gropius-druecker.de For the record, at the time of writing I have copies of Die Metalwerkstatt am Bauhaus and the Sothebys catalogue listed as reference 2) for sale in separate listings. IMPORTANT There are many more items in my shop that don't appear in regular item searches. So please click the link to my shop above and browse the category menu on the left. NEW! Now you can sign up for a regular e-mail bulletin detailing my latest finds and offers by adding me to your list of favourite sellers. The e-mail is free, eBay system generated (so your e-mail address remains private) and you can unsubscribe at any time. Payment and Postage Paypal is accepted and I do not add a surcharge to cover their fees. UK buyers only may also pay by cheque or postal order. If it's a cheque, please allow 7 to 10 days for it to clear. In exceptional circumstances it may be possible for overseas customers to pay by another means such as bank transfer in GBP£ by prior arrangement. All buyers please make contact within 3 days of auction. Payment is required within 7 days. Please note that the shipping options below are for tracked postage. It is a sad fact that it has become necessary to use only tracked means of postage for most items because of the increasing instances of fraud and I am acting on the unequivocal advice of Paypal. Please note that tracking does raise the cost of shipping and the prices indicated below are calculated at cost. Unlike some sellers I do not seek to make profit from inflating shipping costs. Please do bear this in mind when leaving feedback. Non-payment All non-paying bidders are, without exception, reported to eBay. This is not for the sake of being vindictive, but because eBay charges retrospective fees calculated on the actual sale price of items and this money needs to be retrieved. It's hard enough to make ends meet on here as it is! Thank you for your understanding. Please refer to eBay's policy on non-payment for more information, including its ramifications for the bidder. Condition of items Please note that, unless clearly stated otherwise, my listings are for vintage/antique items and therefore, by definition, are not going to be in the same condition you would expect from a brand new item. Please be assured that I always endeavour to offer the most accurate description possible of the item's condition and take multiple illustrative photographs. Vintage electrical items Unless clearly stated otherwise in the description, vintage electrical items are sold in their original condition so should be safety checked by an electrician before use. Returns Returns are possible, if reported within 7 days and by prior arrangement, if a mistake has been made in the listing and the item is not as described, but for no other reason. I'm afraid that straightforward buyer's remorse does not qualify. Thanks very much for taking the time to read this and best of luck bidding!
