This book is a detailed account of individual U-boat actions set in the context of the changing U-boat strategy of the Second World War. It highlights the extraordinary bravery of the men who served in the U-boats as well as the faults that brought the U-boat strategy down.

The deadly menace of German submarines very nearly brought defeat to the British. U-boats hunting in packs wreaked havoc on Allied Merchant Ships and their vital cargoes, but in turn came to suffer horrendous losses and were vanquished in the end by superior tactics and technical supremacy of their pursuers.

Some 70% of U-boat crewmen perished at sea and in this powerful book the experiences of the German survivors are recreated. There was drama and excitement mixed with constant numbing danger which is almost unimaginable to anyone who has not lain silent and freezing, facing death beneath the waves in a trapped submarine under attack.

This book is divided into 13 chapters, each charting the history of a specific U-boat , such as Chapter 4 - U152, Chapter 8 - U167 etc.... The book has 224 pages and has many black & white photographs in the centre of U-boats and their captains as well as maps and life inside a U-boat.
