What is an IP rating? IP stands for "Ingress Protection". The IP is normally followed by 2 numbers. The first number indicates the level of protection the enclosure provides against access to hazardous parts and the ingress of solid foreign bodies. The highest possible "first number" rating is a 6 which means dust tight. The second number indicates the level of protection of the internal equipment against harmful ingress of water. The highest possible "second number" rating is an 8. Where the second digit in a 5, this means there is suitable protection against water jets. Therefore an item listed as IP65 rated, is both dust tight & protected against water jets - ie water projected by a nozzle from any direction will not have any harmful effect.
