The title character, played by John Turturro, is a Broadway playwright, based on Clifford Odets, lured to Hollywood with the promise of untold riches by a boorish studio chieftain (played by Michael Lerner as a combination of Louis B. Mayer and Harry Cohn).
Despising the film capital and everything it stands for, Barton Fink comes down with an acute case of writer's block. He is looked after by a secretary (Judy Davis) who has been acting as a ghost writer for an alcoholic screenwriter (John Mahoney, playing a character based on William Faulkner). Also keeping tabs on Fink is a garrulous traveling salesman (John Goodman), the most likeable, stable character in the picture. Barton Fink finds himself plunged into a surreal nightmare ...
Once more, Ethan and Joel Coen serve up a smorgasbord of quirkiness and kinkiness ...
Our Comment:
If you haven't already, you MUST see this film - okay everybody knows that when the Coen brothers names appear on a film, that you're in for a treat, right?
Well, this is the treat of treats (we don't want to over sell it!). This is our fave Coen film to date, bar none. The usual Coen traits are here - dark, insightful, edgy humour, colourful yet credible characters ...
Unlike the the review above, we don't want to give too much away - if you're a first time viewer. See it and judge for yourself ...

Buyer Beware - This is a pre-owned DVD with the following condition rating:

The disc is excellent, with only a few minor surface marks that do not affect playback.

The cover does have some crease lines, presumably where it had been folded in transit, before being inserted into the case and under the plastic seal.
Buy with confidence -- we only buy used DVDs that are in excellent overall condition, if the playing surface is too badly marked, we simply won't acquire them.
Furthermore, we always test them to ensure any marks on the playing surface do not affect playback. |
