The East Somerset Railway is a heritage railway that runs from Cranmore to Mendip Vale, a distance of about 2½ miles. This stretch is a small portion of the line that, prior to the Beeching Axe in the 1960s, ran from Witham to Wells. First opened in 1858, the line was acquired by the Great Western in 1874.

After closure in the 1960s the line reopened in the early 1970s. The steam locomotive shown is no. 750293 (The Green Knight). This was one of two owned by the artist and conservationist, David Shepherd, one of the founders of the new East Somerset Railway. The Green Knight is a BR standard class 4 4-6-0, dating from around the 1950s.
