QIAN JIN TYPE MAIN LINE STEAM LACOMOTIVE The Qian Jin (QJ), meaning Progress, main line steam locomotive is one of the most popular steam locomotives in China's history. Formerly knows as the He Ping locomotive, meaning Peace, the design was first commissioned in 1955.With the help of Soviet engineers, the Dalian Locomotive and Rollong Stock Works was designed and built the first successful prototype in September 1956. At first, the short production runs of the locomotive were produced by workshops in Changchun, Mudanjiang, Shenyang,Tangshan and Datong. However, since 1964, the locomotive was mainly manufactured at the Datong Locomotive Works, which also specialized in the manufature of 4 axle and 6 axle tenders. The locomotive was used to ptovide both freight and passenger service throughout China, and was usually seen doubled-headed. These were a total of 4,714 QJs built, making it one of the most common locomotives in China.Production of the locomotive had only ceased in 1988 and they still provide freight teansport in the northern regions of China today.
