 DETAILS: (New York): Robert E. Krieger Publishing Co. Inc., 1971. Facsimile edition of first English edition (revised and enlarged). Original blue cloth bindings with silver lettering to spines. 348, 10, 351-1173pp (continuous pagination). No dustjackets, as issued. Size:  large 8vo - 6in (15.5cm) by 9.25in (23.7cm) (slightly larger than standard sized books).


CONDITION: Very Good to Near Fine (see table below for details). BOTH VOLUMES: Lettering clear and bright. Slightest of marking to front board of Vol 1. Bookplates to front pastedowns read: 'Ex Libris J. Colin Dagnall' (*see below for details), with his pencil and ink annotations to front endpapers. Hinges and bindings firm. Pages clean and blemish-free. Collated and complete. A solid and attractive set. *Photo(s) given of actual book.


CONTENTS: Baas provides a comprehensive, though concise, history of medicine, beginning from the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, and featuring extensive discussion of mediaeval and American medicine, up to the nineteenth century and 'Most Recent Medicine.' The original work by Bass appeared in German in 1876. This is a facsimile edition of a translation (revised and enlarged) by H. E. Handerson originally published in New York in 1889.

Johann Hermann Baas was a German physician, who studyied at the University of Giessen, and graduated in 1860. His work was the standard on medical history, until superceded by Garrison's. An interesting and detailed two-volume work, in collectable condition.
