The Bumps!
The Bumps Rowing board game in a slim-line portable flip top case.
If you’ve got a cox, rower or rowing fan in your life, male or female, this unique slim-line Bumps Rowing board game makes the perfect gift or you could, of course, just keep it for yourself.
If you’ve never heard of the Bumps, read on but if you’ve rowed in the Bumps or you’re a Bumps Rowing fan, you can skip the next bit as you’ll already know it all.
The Bumps is a rowing contest with a difference – a destruction derby on the river. A bunch of 17 crews (or sometimes 18 but now it starts to get complicated) line up behind each other on the river about 150 feet apart and set off at the shot from a cannon – each crew tries to catch the crew in front and Bump their boat while all the time trying to avoid being Bumped by the crew behind. Bumping can be anything from a gentle touch to major destruction and is usually a bit of a surprise to the chasing crew as they are all of course facing backwards so don’t have a clue what is going on unless the Cox tells them. If the Bumping bit isn’t destructive enough for you, the overall winner – Head of the River - according to tradition, even gets to burn a boat at the end of the festivities.
Primarily performed by Cambridge University College Boat Clubs on the river Cam, the May Bumps is probably the highlight and is watched by huge crowds along the river banks. If you’re a Rowing fan and you’ve never witnessed May Bumps, it really is worth a visit. But be warned, they actually take place in June. If you want a better explanation, you’ll need to do some research on the web.
Back to the game……
This is a Quikky dice rolling game with simple rules for 1, 2, 3 or 6 players of any age from 9 to 99 or more very loosely based on the rules of the Bumps - we couldn’t fit 18 crews on the board and we certainly don’t encourage any burning of boats at the end of the races. Apart from that it has all the elements of luck, chaos and confusion you might expect in the real thing – over-bumps, double over-bumps and rowing over.
All carefully concealed inside a slim-line hinged plastic case containing dice and playing pieces with the rules printed inside the case, this makes an ideal travel or portable game which fits neatly inside sports bags, rucksacks, executive bags and more. Open the case and hey presto inside you have the game and all the playing pieces you need to get going and there’s even room in the case for other stuff too.
Ideal entertainment anytime anywhere – on the towpath, in the punt, in the college bar, on the train, on the plane, on the beach or anywhere you fancy – any time is Quikky time.
