This is a brand new listing of fresh Amaryllid seed, again a rare and easy chance but in short supply only and won’t last long! My last 7 listings of Amaryllids have been selling well, some of which have sold out, the rest are reduced to clear (some half price bargains) as i haven’t got many left – last chance – you may never get these chances ever again! These are all absolute bargains right now but will end soon as they need sowing before they deteriorate – all are pre-germinated and so easy!

This is the 1st of 3 new offerings, Clivia Miniata (AGM) a very popular and exceptionally beautiful plant which is receiving lots of attention lately. Known as the Bush Lily and native to S.Africa they are widely cultivated throughout the world (never more so) and are now the subject of many breeding programmes with hybridizers in  S.Africa, USA, Australia, China and Japan to expand the colour range and even variegated foliage. I personally own some of these new rare forms but they cost an absolute fortune and are they any better? It is a matter of opinion but to be honest i’m still partial to the good old original an offer here, won’t cost you an ‘arm and a leg’ and is so easy and tough, yet exotic. A mature clump in full flower can be absolutely magnificent and a sight for sore-eyes!

The Bush Lily is named after the Duchess of Northumberland (Lady Charlotte Clive) who first cultivated & flowered it in Britain. It is now apparently in decline in its native Zululand (Natal) due to its medicinal properties, and is traditionally used by the Zulu’s to treat childbirth problems & snakebites by use of the rhizomes – thankfully i only have grass snakes in my garden and ponds and should be ok!!

Clivia Miniata (AGM) makes a spectacular houseplant tolerant of a lot of neglect, ideal for home, conservatory or cold glasshouse, though it is hardy to freezing point (I’ve had them frozen in a polytunnel) and can be grown outside in mild area’s in well drained gritty soil in part shade/filtered sun and bright but indirect light indoors. Full sun will stunt their growth and yellow them off and in fact they can take full shade both indoors and out, very undemanding, tough and drought tolerant (the roots and fleshy and store water) you will find it hard to fail with these plants!!

Clivias in the wild grow in low woody areas, by streams and among shrubs and are rhizomatous (with swollen bulb-like bases) evergreen perennials and are quite handsome all year round. Thick, leathery dark green shiny almost waxy strappy leaves are produced to around 18in or so long and form a very distinctive fanlike arrangement. From spring to summer thick stout stems 12-24in produce beautiful large clusters of fragrant blooms like upturned bells or open trumpets that are quite robust and about 2-3in, up to 20 blooms appear in a lovely apricot/salmon/orange with a lemon throat. Clivias dislike root disturbance and can be left in the same pot for years, in fact they flower better when pot bound as the restricted root run encourages flowering and so does a winter rest i find.

These plants are very long lived, but seed production is very slow indeed, berries can take a year  to ripen – hence the rarity and price of all amaryllids,my prices however are a bargain (yes i would say that, but it is true) but i repeat ,they wont be on offer for long and will require immediate sowing.

I am offering 9 top size large seed in mixed shades (apricot, orange, salmon and red),as a bonus i am also adding 1 of the much sought after Clivia citrina (a beautiful rare lemon species).

Each pkt contains 9 mixed shades + 1 lemon citrina.
