This is an excellent auto bounce, swivel and zoom twin flashgun for many manual focus SLR cameras (see below), including many of the classic Canon, Minolta, Nikon, Olympus and Pentax models. It's switchable between the different makes, which is ideal for photographers with more than one type, or those looking to upgrade. It also has a low trigger voltage and standard (non-dedicated) setting - ideal for many digital SLR and compact cameras - see the Compatibility section below. We've used this flash successfully on an Olympus E-20 in non-dedicated mode (it works equally well on many Fujifilm and Panasonic models), and on a Pentax *ist DS in aperture priority auto, and it makes a cost-effective alternative to the much more expensive digital flashes.
The bounce and swivel flash head tilts up 90 degrees and swivels over 330 degrees for bounce flash in vertical or horizontal positions. Bounce flash gives much softer, more natural lighting than direct flash. A secondary flash tube is built in, and this fills in the shadows when bounce flash is used. This can be switched on or off as desired. Zoom flash head adjusts for wide angle (35mm), normal (50mm) and tele (85mm and longer) lenses, giving wider coverage or greater range as appropriate. An extra wide angle diffuser is supplied for 28mm lenses.
Powerful guide numbers vary with the zoom setting, from 42m (139 feet) at the tele setting, through 36m (119 feet) at 50mm, to 30m (100 feet) at 35mm and ISO 100. This gives a theoretical maximum range of up to 20m (65 feet) with a 50mm f/1.8 lens, but as with all flashguns, actual range will depend on the conditions. The guide number with the 28mm extra wide diffuser is 25m (82 feet).
Two auto modes are provided, giving auto ranges of up to 10.7m (35 feet). Dedicated operation with many other cameras (see below) setting shutter speed automatically. Thyristor circuitry used in auto modes for faster recycling and more flashes per set of batteries. Comprehensive control panel on the rear of the flash provides distances from 0.6 to 15m (2 to 50 feet), apertures from f/2 to f/32 and film speeds from ISO 25 to 800 (15 to 30 DIN for German users). Ready light, plus test button and auto check light confirms correct exposure after the shot has been taken (also shown in the viewfinder with many cameras).
The flash also contains a slave detector, so it can fire automatically when it detects another flash going off nearby. This can be used for multiple flash setups, or with cameras that have a built in flash but no hot shoe or external connection (not suitable for models with pre-flash). This independent Hanimex TZ3600 flashgun is nicely made (in Japan), stands 145mm (5.75 inches) tall and weighs around 365g (without batteries). Locking shoe fitting for secure mounting. Power is supplied by 4x standard AA batteries, which are inexpensive and easily obtainable. Disposable Alkaline (supplied) or rechargeable NiCd and NiMH types can be used.
An excellent dedicated flash unit, also suitable for many non-dedicated digital cameras!

Auto or manual (non-dedicated) flash modes work on older Pentax cameras such as the ME, MX, KM, KX, K2, K1000, Spotmatic and other M42 cameras, plus many others.
Other cameras The flash is also suitable for any non-dedicated camera with a hot shoe connection, in auto or manual modes. The trigger voltage is quite low at under 10v (well within the ISO standard of 24v), which is suitable for most cameras including many digital models with a hot shoe, but not Canon EOS which specifies under 6v. A socket is provided for a PC synchro cable (included). The flash is ideal for digital cameras such as the popular Fujifilm S9500, S9600 and S100FS, Panasonic DMC-FZ10, FZ20 and FZ30, etc.
