when ray roberts (bill nighy) arrives in small-town keighley to take part in the annual british hairdressing championship, he seeks out his old colleague phil (alan rickman), a former golden boy of the competition circuit who inexplicably left styling behind to become an ordinary barber. phil feigns disinterest in the competition, but his son brian (josh hartnett), also a barber, is eager to take part. will phil be persuaded to enter the fray and strike a blow for local pride against the national talent? will brian get distracted by ray's beautiful daughter christina (rachel leigh cook)?
