Bing & Grondahl is a famous Danish factory making fine porcelains and was opened in 1853 by Frederick Vilhelm Grondahl. Grondahl was an artist and sculptor. M.H. and J.H. Bing were successful businessmen in the city of Copenhagen and using the talents of Grondahl and the investment of the Bing brothers the company was launched.
Vilhelm Grondahl died during 1855 which should have meant the end of this young venture.
But the Bing brothers were made of strong stuff and despite some hard years they solved many production problems and finally established products that have stood the test of time.
Underglaze blue decoration commenced in 1886.
Rapid growth of the company was the result throughout the 20th century and Bing and Grondahl were able to open a second factory in 1949 to keep up with demand.
The firm has used the initials B & G and a stylised castle as part of the mark since 1898.
Bing and Grondahl’s porcelain collectibles are featured in the Buckingham Palace and the Royal Courts of Denmark, Sweden, and Great Britain. Additionally, many of Bing and Grondahl’s collectible items can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
The company became part of Royal Copenhagen in 1987.
