A Road To Zanzibar (Dir.
Victor Schertzinger, 1941): Chuck and his pal Fearless flee a South
African carnival when their sideshow causes a fire. After several
similar escapades, they've finally saved enough to return to the USA,
when Chuck spends it all on a "lost" diamond mine. But that's only the
beginning; before long, a pair of attractive con-women have tricked our
heroes into financing a comic safari, featuring numerous burlesque
jungle adventures...
Going My Way (Dir. Leo McCarey, 1944): Youthful
Father Chuck O'Malley (Bing Crosby) led a colorful life of sports,
song, and romance before joining the Roman Catholic clergy, but his
level gaze and twinkling eyes make it clear that he knows he made the
right choice. After joining a parish, O'Malley's worldly knowledge
helps him connect with a gang of kids looking for direction and handle
the business details of the church-building fund, winning over his
aging, conventional superior (Barry Fitzgerald). Songs such as
"Swinging on a Star" sparkle, and both Crosby and Fitzgerald do a fine
job tugging at the heartstrings in a gentle, irresistible way that will
make viewers return to this lovely film again and again.
Holiday Inn (Dir. Mark Sandrich, 1942): With music
by Irving Berlin (including the one and only 'White Christmas'), songs
sung by Bing Crosby and dancing by Fred Astaire, Holiday Inn is one of
the most delightful and memorable musicals of all time!
Crosby plays Jim Hardy, a song and dance man who leaves showbiz to open
a Connecticut inn. And Astaire plays Ted Hanover, Hardy's former
partner and rival in love. And, of course, there are girls (Marjorie
Reynolds, Virginia Dale), a Texas millionaire (Walter Abel) and plenty
of lavish song and dance routines and spectacular production numbers.
Pennies From Heaven (Dir. Norman Z. McLeod, 1936):
Legendary crooner Bing Crosby, sings and dances his way though this
charming and delightful story of a wanderer who drifts into the lives
and hearts of the residents of the small town of Middletown, New
Jersey. Featuring music and lyrics by Johnny Burke and Arthur Johnston,
including the classics "So Do I," "Pennies From Heaven" (Academy Award
nominee for Best Music/Song), "Skeleton In the Closet" and "Lets Call A
Heart A Heart."
