Battle of Britain RAF Kenley Cover signed by Flight Lieutenant Trevor Gray AE

JS(CC)89 / JS(BB)9 60th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain cover with artwork by Tony Theobald showing a Hurricane of No 615 Squadron and Spitfires of No 64 Squadron in background engaging Bf 109s. The cover also shows the Distinguished Flying Cross awarded to airmen for bravery and gallantry. The cover bears white definitive stamp cancelled with 60th Anniversary Battle of Britain postmark.

This cover has been signed by Flight Lieutenant Trevor Gray, who flew with Spitfires with No 64 Squadron from September 1940 through to April 1941.

Official special, numbered and certified on reverse.

Flight Lieutenant Trevor Gray AE
Gray joined the RAFVR in Manchester in 1939 and was called for service on the outbreak of war. As he was only partially trained, he was firstly sent to EFTS, Cambridge, Brough and then AFTS, Cranfield. On completing training he was awarded his wings and was posted to 7 OTU at Hawarden where he converted to Spitfires.

On September 16 he joined 64 Squadron at Leconfield and mainly flew shipping patrols over the channel. On October 15 the Squadron moved to Coltishall covering the south-east sector and he damaged a Bf 110 in December 1940. The squadron moved to Hornchurch at the end of March 1941 and Gray left the Squadron on April 3 1941 having completed his tour.

Gray was posted to 58 OTU at Grangemouth as an instructor from there he was posted to Castletown, the most northerly station on the mainland, to join 124 (Baroda and Bhopal) squadron which was then being formed.

At this time Gray suffered a reduction in flying category from medical causes, which limited his flying to reduced altitude and was transferred to flying instruction duties and trained both flying instructors and recruits until 1943.

Gray was then given a post as a research engineer officer at RAE Farnborough until released from the RAF in February 1946.
