Description
THE BATTLE OF THE SEXES is a witty black comedy from Ealing comedy director Charles Crichton. The House of MacPherson has been supplying Scottish tweeds for years--its weavers make the tweed in their homes on the Scottish islands, and the staff sells it in the company's Edinburgh premises. When Old MacPherson (Ernest Thesiger) dies, his son, Young MacPherson (Robert Morley), takes over and brings in an efficiency expert. That's bad enough, but worse, the expert is a woman and, even worse than that, she is an American woman. Horrors. The staff, led by Mr. Martin (Peter Sellers), is aghast. The expert Angela Barrows (Constance Cummings) begins to organise, to streamline, and to make plans to update the company's manufacturing methods. Young MacPherson is entranced--seduced by the idea of becoming famous for his soon-to-be-implemented revolutionary manufacturing methods. However, the ever-deferential Mr. Martin discovers unexpected levels of cunning as he pits his wits against the brash American. THE BATTLE OF THE SEXES is crisply directed by Charles Crichton, with a witty script by Monja Danischewsky, based on a James Thurber story. And Peter Sellers gives a fine performance as the shy, inhibited Mr. Martin, who turns out to be an extraordinary schemer.

Angela Barrows (Constance Cummings) is a man-eating business woman who is sent by her American employer to investigate their export opportunities in Edinburgh. En route she meets Robert MacPherson (Robert Morley) a business woman who asks for her help to bring his company into the 20th century. The staff, led by Mr Martin (Peter Sellers), has other ideas however, and a comic battle between the old and new business methods soon brakes out. A vintage eter Sellers comedy that ranks amongst his funniest.

DVDs contain Regional Codes which can be used to prevent the playback of certain discs depending upon the geographical area it is played in. The various studios and home video companies lobbied to make sure this coding system was a required part of the current DVD standards, because they wish to control how their DVD titles are exported to other countries. (For example, while a recent film may already have played theatrically in the United States and been released to the home video market, that same film may not yet have opened in some European or Asian countries.) In most instances, discs manufactured in one region will usually only play on players that were manufactured for that same region - this means that discs bought or imported from Japan will not play on U.S. players, and vice versa.

Some DVDs, however, are coded for Region 0 - which means they will play in any of the six regular regions. There are also DVD players that don't check the region coding of the DVD so will play any disc from any region - these are generally referred to as Code Free players or Multi Region DVD Players.
