Reviews Review A genuinely epic achievement, the 10-part World War II drama Band of Brothers is a television series that makes big-screen Hollywood war movies look small in comparison. Based on the book by historian Stephen Ambrose, the series follows the US 101st Airborne Division's "Easy" E-Company from initial training through D-Day and across Holland, Belgium, Germany and Austria until the end of the war. Coproduced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, the series take its initial inspiration from Saving Private Ryan and borrows that film's visceral visual approach to combat scenes using hand-held camerawork and de-saturated photography. But where Band of Brothers excels is in its scrupulous attention to the realities of military life (retired US Marine Captain Dale Dye, who also co-stars, is the man to credit). After the high drama of the parachute drop on D-Day, Easy's greatest trial comes during the Battle of the Bulge, when they are besieged at Bastogne in the depths of winter. In one of the most harrowing and credible depictions of war ever committed to film we see the men enduring the repeated artillery attacks of the German forces and experience, if only vicariously, some of the sheer terror of the assault, while being humbled by the soldiers' courage and determination. Such feelings are enhanced by the series' masterstroke--bookend interviews with the surviving members of Easy Company, who talk with barely suppressed emotion of the experiences we see recreated. The endorsement of these veterans elevates Band of Brothers beyond any mere "war film"--its extraordinary achievement is that it shows the horror and savagery of war without gloss or jingoism, and yet celebrates the fraternal bonds and dogged heroism of the men who fought. On the DVD: Band of Brothers arrives handsomely packaged in a six-disc box set with two episodes on each of the first five discs. Sound (Dolby 5.1) and picture (1.78:1 widescreen) only enhance the series' epic credentials. Disc 6 contains all the extras, the meatiest of which is the marvellous 80-minute documentary "We Stand Alone Together" about the real men of Easy Company. There's also a first-rate, genuinely interesting 30-minute "making of" feature about actor boot camp, visual effects and blowing up fake trees among many other things. This is complemented by actor Ron Livingston's revealing Video Diaries of boot camp. Additionally there's a "Who's Who" section and footage of the HBO premiere at Utah Beach, plus a TV spot for car company Jeep. --Mark Walker

Dont think so Much Just BUY! I have always wanted to buy the whole set, but was very expensive when it was released. You have to have this in your collection MUST see! I love this.
Highly Recommended Band of Brothers was highly recommended to me. I have watch some of the episodes and they are very good.
The seller was excellent, no fuss delivery on time
Very moving.... I absolutely love this series and bought it purely on the strength of the other reviews.
The characters all have their flaws but their bond during the war is really touching and very believable. It presents war as it was/is - it's not dramatic or cruel or glorious - it simply is what it is. I have recommended this to my family and friends, some of whom have subsequently bought it as a result, and they all love it. The interviews with the actual soldiers of Easy Company really make the series and to see how they are all affected by the war makes it all the more...? (I can't think of a word that best describes it).
On an important note, Blythe did not die of his wounds - he actually survived the war and even attended a reunion! Unfortunately the soldiers 'remembered' incorrectly that he died as a result of his injuries.
If you ever have the chance to go to Austria then do so, as it enhances the series even more. I have been to Hitler's 'Eagles Nest' although it rained the entire time and we couldn't see a metre in front of us when on the balcony. It kills me to see the absolutely beautiful view that the series has. Dammit!
Band Of Brothers - Complete HBO Series Brilliant, fantastic, gripping, a must see series. Should be used in schools as a part of our recent history. As well as the lifelong bond formed between those involved, it also shows why 'wars' sometimes need to be fought, and the tragedy war brings to everyone not just soldiers, sailors etc, and therefore why armed conflict should be avoided wherever possible!
Excellent value We bought this as the ideal leavers gift for a history teacher. He was thrilled. Much better than the book as you don't have to struggle with Ambrose's fanzine prose. Early episodes beautifully directed. Interviews with the real people involved are fascinating and the real Winters is considerably more glamorous and impressive than his screen representation, even at almost 80.
DVDs contain Regional Codes which can
be used to prevent the playback of certain discs depending upon the geographical
area it is played in. The various studios and home video companies lobbied to make
sure this coding system was a required part of the current DVD standards, because
they wish to control how their DVD titles are exported to other countries. (For
example, while a recent film may already have played theatrically in the United
States and been released to the home video market, that same film may not yet have
opened in some European or Asian countries.) In most instances, discs manufactured
in one region will usually only play on players that were manufactured for that
same region - this means that discs bought or imported from Japan will not play
on U.S. players, and vice versa.
Some DVDs, however, are coded for Region 0 - which means they will play in any of
the six regular regions. There are also DVD players that don't check the region
coding of the DVD so will play any disc from any region - these are generally referred
to as Code Free players or Multi Region DVD Players.
