Banana fibre has been in use since 16 th century to make rope, cord and textiles.India led the world in banana production representing 23% of the world wide crop.most which was for domestic consuption.The stem of banana plant is usually thrown away once the plantain is harvested the stem. The deacying outer layers of the trees  harvested and soaked in water to naturaly remove the soft pulp, leaving the cellulose fibres . The fibre are then washed, crushed and processed to make a fibre base suitable for hand spinning.Though highly edible and nutrious the fibre from the banana stems (psedo stems,actually) are strong as any other plant fibre.

The fibre is refined,processed and skeined by women co-oprative in south India, and this 100% banana yarn  comes from a renewable,sustainable and enviormentally-friendly source. This banana yarn known as a vegan silk yarn.Lustrous and silky, Hand spun and Hand dyed these banana fibres suitable for knitting, weaving, decorative tassels and other art and craft project.  Yardage: Since the yarn is hand spun, the yardage  varies from skein per skein the thickness and amount of twist in particular skein make diffrence in the total yardage, however approximately 65 yards per  100gm skein,

Needle size:  US 8-10 (metric 5-6mm, UK/CANADA 6-4)

 Guage :  Approximately 12-16 stiches per 10 cm  (3-4 stiches per inch)

 Hand wash gently in warm water do not scrub or wring out sqeeze gently to remove excess water or wrap a towel around  and lay flat to dry....Check out my other items!
