Item Description
  • Artist: Dishaka Morao
  • Item Number E2675
  • Diameter 13.5"
  • Height 5.0"

This is an authentic Botswana basket from the 'Okavango Delta' region of North Western Botswana hand crafted by Artist Dishaka Morao, with locally sourced materials of Vegetable Ivory Palm and indigenous bark stains, all woven into the most intricate and beautiful collection piece.

I have seen much African art and the quality and finish of work on all of these Okavango Baskets is exceptionally high: the pictures hardly do them justice.  This is not a utilitarian product but an item of beauty and outstanding museum-quality craftsmanship.  Baskets of this quality take months of painstaking work to complete.

The Etsha Weavers group (EWG), to which the artist belongs, is a co-operative formed by 26 of the top Botswana basket weavers. They work with pride, consistently producing museum-quality baskets and building an international reputation for their county. They also regularly attend training workshops to enhance their already considerable skills.

All artists benefit directly from the income generated by sales. Weaving is often their only source of income so their earnings from the EWG provide vital support to them and their families in a remote and barren corner of Botswana.  This project gives people control over their lives, promising hope and a better future for them and their children.

Although as yet little known, Botswanas baskets are considered by experts to be amongst the finest of their kind and museum-quality examples such as these may be thought of as collectors items.  Traditionally made for storage, their craftsmanship and patterning makes these baskets perfect for display especially, in groups on walls.

The basket types vary considerably by size: the bigger and deeper the basket the more work in weaving it.  An arrangement of differing shapes and sizes makes for an appealing wall display suitable possibly for a Board Room or Conference Room.

I think it better to leave the various patterns to your interpretation, so look in this diagram to see if you can work it out.

Remember every basket is unique: no two baskets are or can be the same.

About Us

Msasa Trading is UK based, and these products are held and distributed out of the UK office. Having spent much of my youth in Southern African countries, I have traveled them all extensively and have a desire to do my bit to help enrich the lives of the inhabitants.
I now live in the UK and when I was presented with the opportunity to sell these products I leapt at it. To me, this trade ensures that the people in rural Africa have access to something which can reward their effort and skills and allow them to change their lives and the lives of those around them. It is interesting to see how a little income in a rural area goes a long way to provide food, health and most importantly education that can so change the lives of future generations. If you would like more information about Botswana and its Baskets I will be happy to refer you to my father who lives there and who has written extensively about it.
