Stephen Pochin, Evolution Vol. One, From Influx to Automatic Drawing, Austin Osman Spare and Poetry, the Particular Influence of William Blake, W.B. Yeats and John Gray, Mandrake Press 2008. Square format 8.5ins x 8.5ins 43pp Hardback, gutter binding. Numbered Limited Edition of 225, this copy is still sealed in plastic, so I do not know the number. This is the first of the Evolution Series of monographs upon Spare which will be uniformly bound, the series number blind stamped along the for edge with Sparean symbol in black upon a gilt disc on the front cover. 

Stephen Pochin takes a close look at Spare's interactions with contemporary poets, and shows how their influences had an effect on Spare's own work, in particular, the early books that Spare produced. Pochin suggests that it was through W.B. Yeats that Spare became aware of the meaning of Blake's work and that this had a profound effect upon the development of Spare's magico-mystical system. He also offers some illuminating insight into Spare's relationship with John Gray, who is generally taken as the model for Dorian Gray in Oscar Wilde's story. Pochin concludes with an examination of Spare's development of the Alphabet of Desire and his exploration of the inner realms of consciousness.
 

All copies are printed upon high quality archival paper but, there are variations. Some are printed on a slightly yellowish goatskin parchment paper, others on white 100% cotton wove and some (including this copy) are printed upon 100% cotton smooth white paper. A small label on the rear pastedown identifies the paper used and the original seller.  

This is an important study, which sheds much light on the development of Spare's writing and art, and comes in a very handsomely produced volume, with many illustrations and photgraphs. It is certain to become very collectible and sought after. This copy is brand new, and still sealed in publisher's plastic wrap. It has never been opened or read.
