Including such memorable characters as Evil Edna the Witch, Mavis Cruet the Fat Fairy and Arthur the Caterpillar. In 1981 the BBC began airing the first series of Willo the Wisp to a teatime audience just before the early evening news on BBC1. So popular was the series with both the young and old that the audience figures were soon averaging nine million, a feat that has never been surpassed by a children’s television series.
