    Guro-Yaure Spirit Mask

    Farmer Spirit

These are among the most mysterious -- and most beautiful - masks in Africa. Anthropologists have yet to penetrate the secret societies which regulate so much of Guro daily life. However the Guro and the Yaure, like the Baule, with whom they share an artistic tradition, believe strongly in protective spirits. These masks are worn by secret societies to invoke the power of human-animal creatures that they believe influence the fertility of the soil, healthy crops, etc.

This particular mask may represent and animal-human hybrid, but it is more likely to be a farmer-spirit, who wears an agricultural implement on his crest. The expression is serene and beautiful.

A very old mask with a fine grey-brown patina, has seen ritual use.

This was part of an ethnographic collection assembled by the late F.P. Macleod-Selkirk and his father. The collection was begun in 1900 and many of the pieces date to the 19th Century.
