Archery is fun but choosing your first bow and arrow can be daunting. You need to select the correct bow and arrows according to your size, weight and strength. Firstly we offer inexpensive options for Archery and include sets which have a bow, arrows, quivers and hand guard all ready to go. We stock two types of bow - Recurve Bows and Compound Bows What is a Recurve Bow? A recurve bow is a form of bow defined by the side-view profile; in contrast to the simple longbow, a recurve bow has tips that curve away from the archer when the bow is unstrung. By one technical definition, the difference between recurve and other bows is that the string touches sections of the limbs of recurve bows when the bow is strung. A recurve bow stores more energy than an equivalent straight-limbed bow, giving a greater amount of cast to the arrow. A recurve bow is the only class of bow that is shot at the Olympic Games. Its basic working principles are similar to that of a traditional longbow. Its defining feature is that the ends of the limbs curve forwards slightly, which increases the power gained from the bow and smoothens the draw. What is a Compound Bow? A compound bow is a modern bow that uses a levering system of cables and usually cams and pulleys to draw the limbs back. The limbs of a compound bow are usually much stiffer than those of a recurve bow or longbow. This limb stiffness makes the compound bow more energy efficient than other bows, but the limbs are too stiff to be drawn comfortably with a string attached directly to them. The compound bow has the string attached to the pulleys, one or both of which has one or more cables attached to the opposite limb. When the string is drawn back, the string causes the pulleys to turn. This causes the pulleys to pull the cables, which in turn causes the limbs to bend and thus store energy. The use of this levering system gives the compound bow a characteristic draw-force curve which rises to a peak weight and then "lets off" to a lower holding weight. The compound bow is little-affected by changes of temperature and humidity and gives superior accuracy, velocity, and distance in comparison to other bows. A compound bow is designed to reduce the force that an archer must hold, yet increase the overall energy stored by the bow. Most compound designs use cams or elliptical wheels on the ends of the limbs to optimize the leverage exerted by the archer and to reduce the holding force of the bow at full draw in what is known as the "let-off". With less force required to hold a compound bow at full draw, the muscles take longer to fatigue, thus giving a compound archer more time to aim. A compound bow must be adjusted so that the let-off occurs at the correct draw length appropriate to the archer. What is a Crossbow? A crossbow is a variation on the general bow design. Instead of the limbs being held vertically, they are mounted horizontally on a stock much like that of a firearm. The limb design can either be compound or a recurve but the basic concept of shooting is the same. The string is pulled back either manually or with a windlass and locked into place. The string remains in this locked position, held soley through mechanical means until the energy stored in its limbs is released by a trigger mechanism, which launches the loaded missile. The energy stored in the shortened limbs is comparable to the longbow but packed into a smaller design that is also much easier to aim. Crossbows shoot quarrels or bolts, shorter arrows than those usual for bows. Please do not order Archery arrows for crossbows we have dedicated Crossbow bolts. Choosen your type of Bow ? Now Choose the Size of Bow Length There is a very simple exercise you can do to determine what size of bow you need. If you are quite small and order a large bow then this bow will not be suitable for you. Vice Versa if you order a small bow and you are quite tall then again this bow will not be suitable. The Bow Length is basically the length of arrow in this exercise to find correct bow length for you. You will need somebody to help you with a measuring tape sizes measured are according to inches. Simple Exercise to Determine Bow Size required 1) Fully stretch both your arms out in front of you so that your palms are together and your fingertips are also extended. 2) Ask your friend to measure from the centre of your chest region to the end of your fingertips. Note down this measurement in inches and then add another inch also this gives you a rough estimate of the approx arrow length required. Types of Arrows We supply several types of arrows including different sizes and different specifications like materials used for arrow such as wooden arrows, composite, carbon and aluminium arrows.
