This is a large antique veil, which I would date to Victorian. It is the second I have listed recently.

Embroidered in chain stitch on a net ground, it is most likely to be Limerick lace, which came into being in the 1820's.

The veil is scalloped all around and has floral embroideries all over it. These are linked to make large swathes of decoration.

The larger edge motifs are finished with a lovely border design, all around.

I washed the veil very gently and I am sure by repeating this it will come up even whiter, but it is now a good colour. The trick with using modern detergents is little and short soaks, rather than long sessions that may damage the very old lace.

Clearly delicate, there are lots of minor holes and a few that are about three inches deep. I have shown one of them in the last picture. These would need to be careful sew into folds in the cloth to hide them, or covered with smaller lace motifs. However, many areas of the piece are free of any damage.

An heirloom piece, I do hope that someone wishes to continue to pass it on within their own family!
