Circa.1860 Classical Inspired Gilt & Enamel Victorian Locket

Description

An exceptional opportunity to acquire a rare ( ready to wear) mid 19th century Victorian Locket ( dates to 1860-1870), Classically inspired this piece has all the ingredients of a fine antique victorian jewel . An almost identical piece is illustrated in the excellent reference book - Michael Poynder's 'Jewellery' published by Antique Collectors Club. (plate 212)

The front is decorated with applied bead & thread finely laid out, the centre is a dished shape into which is set a 'torpedo' bead that has a cut star with blue enamel decoration finished with a centre pearl.

The reverse has a very good sized oval locket ( currently this has an insert of a hand tinted picture of a later date than the piece). The locket frame is a ring of gold (tests as 9ct.) it is a socket type locket the internal being base metal.

The piece is made of a gold lookalike, probably pinchbeck, typical of the period. It has a gilt finish which is nice and even but acid test confirms this isnt a solid gold piece. The rim to the glazed back does test as gold.

SIZE: 1 1/8th inch by 13/16th inch and it is 7/16th thick (1 inch = 25.4mm) A lovely useable size.
