Description:
An excellent original antique Victorian period animal portrait oil on artist's board, signed "A. Gordon Clark" and dating circa 1880 - 1900. Framed - approx 15 X 19 inches (38.1 X 48.26cm).

This is an excellent English School oil dating from the Victorian period.
The animal portrait depicts a charming study of a brood of hens pecking grass in a summer field. A fine painting with hints of impressionism, the hens are finely painted with detailing to their colourful plumage. Trees and hedges line the edge of the field, with a small pond just visible, reflecting the trunks of the trees beneath a blue clouded summer sky. A classic piece from the late 19th Century Victorian period.
The work is signed "A. Gordon Clark" lower left.
Date:
The oil probably dates to around 1880 - 1900.
Framing:
Contemporary classic scroll and floral moulded Gesso work. Finish: Gilt.
The oil is mounted on board.
Condition:
The painting is in good condition, set behind glass, although would probably benefit from being removed and lightly cleaned as there is some dust and dirt behind the glass. The frame has quite extensive areas of moulding missing, with a few cracks here and there, again this consistent with age and this type of delicate material.
