Antique Turkoman Silk Robe

DESCRIPTION:
This antique woman’s robe from Uzbekistan called Ikat (Abr) dates back to the early to mid 20th century. Ikat silk was ornamented in the way of interlacing, referring to “Abr”, which means cloud. The word Ikat is used for both the resist-dye weaving process and the finished products and has been traced to a Malay-Indonesian word “mengikat”, which means "to bind or tie." Ikat silk had important social implications in Central Asian culture and some of the uses were dowry gifts, decoration for the marriage bed and the bier and also costume for sacred family rituals. Ikat fabric and other luxury textiles were also known to serve as currency and robes were often received as payment for military and other services rendered to the towns. Luxury Ikat silks like this were originally created in the city of Bukhara, Uzbekistan. The robe is made of pure silk and has printed purple & white inner lining. The robe is a small women’s size and measures 50” across the back from one sleeve end to the other and the length from neck to hem is 42 inches. This is an antique robe and has been worn for many years; therefore it has some normal “wear & tear” but is in overall min condition with no stains or damges. Authentic silk Ikats like this one are extremely hard to find.
