Description: This is a very unusual match holder. The match holder is shaped as two boots with tassels and mice crawling over the boot on the left and one peaking from a hole in the one on the right. The matches would fit inside the boots and the striker is the elongated oval shape below the boots (obviously this was used for the old fashion friction matches). This match holder in mad of a heavy metal but it is not iron neither is it lead or pewter. We are not certain what metal it is. The boots are attached to a metal backing, which is decorated with a geometric design. It does have a hole on top to hang it from on the wall. Very unusual item.
Date: Late 1800s to early 1900s
Origin: Probably Continental.
Size: The plaque itself measures 3 3/4" by 6 7/8", and and the boots are 4" long and ~3" at their widest. The piece weighs almost 15 ounce.
Maker: Unknown
Marks: Marked with the number 99 on the back.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: The metal match holder very unusual and the theme of mice crawling around a pair of old boots is just very European.
Condition: Very good condition given its age and use. It does have several small breaks around the edges, which can be seen in the photos and it is a bit warped but still would hang on a wall with no problem, The metal does have some pitting and some discoloration. However, none of this distracts from the beauty and integrity of the piece.
In Closing: Nice and unusual piece, which would make a great addition to your collection.
